Wolves cruise to victory in Debrecen
Marton David Ivanyi
The Budapest Wolves crushed the Debrecen Gladiators in the opening round of the Hungarian American Football League Div I. The two time Hungarian finalist Gladiators didn't even have their moments as the Wolves offense literally scored at will, while the defense also put on a show sporting their most physical performance to date.
The first points of the game came from kicker Miklos Stumpf on a close field goal, shortly to be followed by a TD run from Laszló Csizmazia. After Norbert Hidvegi, returning after two years off the team, intercepted a Debrecen pass attempt, Krisztian Piros caught his first touchdown of the night. The second quarter went by almost uneventful, only to see Csizmazia put another rushing TD on the board. In the third quarter Piros completed his hat trick of TD's scoring twice to make it 0:38. In the final quarter the Gladiators scored a field goal before Csanad Kiraly and Csaba Majoros caught a TD apiace to make it 3:52. Unprecedented in team history the Wolves had three quarterbacks playing in the game, Attila Lendvai, Sandor Madarasz and the junior Mark Bencsics all throwing for at least one score.
With this landslide victory the Wolves are preparing for their home season opener against the defending Hungarian champion Györ Sharks in high spirits. See the Wolves play for the first time in 2008 on 13 May at 3:00PM in BVSC Stadium at Szőnyi út.
