Wolves get their first

For almost a half, the Budapest Wolves didn’t play like a team that’s supposed to win easy. But after they managed two quick scores late in the first half, it was simply a matter of determining the final score, as the home team struggled to record a first down, let alone score enough to catch the Wolves. Budapest won 0-42 in the end.

Fumbles and interceptions, or simply turnovers, marked the play of both teams in the first half. The Wolves were the only to capitalize on the opponent’s mistake — after they fumbled the ball on Zagreb’s 2-yard line, the Thunder returned the favor a few plays later, and Krisztian Piros finally put his team in front, catching an 8 yard pass from Attila Lendvai. It wasn’t pretty, but not long after they were 14 up when Lendvai hooked up with Csanad Kiraly for a 10 yard score.

The Thunder held on at first, but as the game went on, they had no answer for Lendvai and the Wolves’ passing attack. After a successful drive beginning the second half, Lendvai snuck in for the third score and almost a game clinching lead at that point.

The Wolves’ were all business for the remainder of the game — Peter Cseperkalo ran for two scores and David Koleszar for one. Lendvai even gave way to Mark Bencsics, but that didn’t turn out so well, as the young backup suffered what looked like severe knee injury in the fourth quarter.

Cseperkalo finished the game with 12 carries for 80 yards and two scores, but the real difference makers were the Wolves’ receivers this time, led by Csanad Kiraly’s 7 receptions for 106 yards and a touchdown.
