Serbian rivals meet again

Two of the best Serbian teams, the SBB Vukovi Belgrade and the PBB Kragujevac Wild Boars will meet this weekend in the CEFL for the first time since 2007. The game will take place on the Ada Ciganlija field in Belgrade, Saturday from 12.30PM CET. The game will be broadcast live on the Serbian Sportklub.

Although the Wild Boars didn’t participate in the CEFL since 2007, with the Vukovi becoming the most successful CEFL team in the meantime, the two teams remained bitter rivals in the Serbian league, typically ending their seasons in the championship game. As it usually was with these two teams, the Boars were better early on, but the Vukovi have had the edge in the last years, winning the previous two Serbian Bowls.

This will be the season opener for the Vukovi. They haven’t played a CEFL game since the CEFL Bowl last year, when they lost for the first time at home in six years. This was their third home loss in the CEFL – the first two were against the Wild Boars in 2006. The two teams have a long history of rivalry; in fact, they also played the first ever football game in Serbia. The 10 year anniversary of this game was a couple of weeks ago.

The Vukovi start the season with some new and some old faces. Last year’s MVP Lance Kriesien is again on the roster, but missing is their long time running back Brandon McDowell. He won’t be on the team after four successful seasons, where he was a part of three championship teams.

The season is still in the very early stages, but after a huge win in Budapest, the Wild Boars can’t be taken lightly by any team. If that was just one game or if the Wolves are not as good this year or whatever it is, we can find out better on Saturday.
