The `Hawks win in photo finish

David Turšič`s excellent play on the Silverhawks latest game in Serbia this time resulted in a win for his team. Last minute effort by the team from Mitrovica to score and avoid overtime had a fatal outcome – Damir Žarko`s pass attempt was intercepted by Turšič giving his team possession in the Legionaries territory. One of few successful passes seen in the entire game gave the Silverhawks a first down on the one yard line five seconds before the end. Turšič sneaked in the end zone for the lead, and than added another two points for the final score of 6-14.

A game in which both offenses struggled, most of the excitement came in the final couple of minutes. The visitors took the lead after a fumble by Žarko. Starting inside the Legionaries` half, Ljubljana`s team scored in the second try after a long touchdown pass to Rok Štamcar was overturned because of a penalty, a second overturned touchdown for them already at that point. They scored when, who other than Turšič sneaked in the end zone for a 6 point lead after a badly executed extra point attempt.

There were no other points in the first half, and bad offensive production continued in the third quarter as no new first downs were won almost until the end of the period. Still, the Legionaries took advantage of one of their last opportunities, and relying mostly on running back Zoran Lončarević, scored when the same player entered the end zone to the pleasure of some 1200 home fans. They didn`t get the lead though, as an extra point attempt was missed.

On the Silverhawks` next possession they were forced to punt with a minute remaining on the clock. They got out of a tough situation with an excellent punt that pinned the home team on their own 3 yard line, which in the end had catastrophic consequences for them.

The Legionaries new head coach, Goran Stojanović, wasn`t too critical toward his quarterback. “He`s a good player, we just had a problem passing all day”, he said, adding “I`m glad the team regrouped after the game in Novi Sad. Looking at the team as a whole, I`m more pleased with their effort.”

Again, the best player in silver and blue was David Turšič. “We were waiting to get a win, although I wasn`t giving much thought to the prior defeats. We had two touchdowns that were overturned, and it`s hard to play when you`re making so many mistakes.” Ljubljana`s injury problems resulted in few available players, but according to him, that wasn`t too big of a problem: “I don`t think it`s that much difficult playing both offense and defense. Some players even do better.”
