SELAF resumes play

After a break that lasted for almost two months, American football teams from Serbia and Slovenia will once again occupy football and rugby fields throughout these two countries as play resumes in SELAF. The first game is scheduled for the 13th of August in Kragujevac, when the Wild Boars meet the Legionaries, for whom the defeat will definitely exclude them from competing for the top places.

One of the matches in the spotlight will be the one between the Belgrade Vukovi and the Kragujevac Wild Boars in Belgrade, which is, like in the first part of the season, one of the most anticipated games. As expected, these two teams are currently placed in the top two in the standings, where Vukovi hold first place on one extra win and match. Besides the fact there is a great rivalry between them, when the match gets played it`s possible there`s no significance to it, as there is a good chance that at least one of the teams already places in the final game. Still, it won`t be that easy for them, especially not for Kragujevac, because they not only kickoff the season`s second part, but also play on the next weekend, and altogether they`ll be playing three times in four weeks.

That not all is decided by the time the match in Belgrade is played will be Ljubljana`s and Novi Sad`s goal. Ljubljana survived their opening two defeats, thanks to the win in Mitrovica followed by another tight win against Dukes at home. Their first next match is also the most important – if they want a place in the final, they`ll have to beat the Wild Boars on the 9th of September, in Kragujevac.

Dukes have the same number of wins as Ljubljana, but they`ll probably have to be satisfied with not being outplayed in any game this season, and having a promising season overall. The difference between them and Ljubljana is they have a defeat more, which means that they`ll likely have to win all three games and hope for favorable scores in other matches. One of the positives is that they play two of their three games at home, with their only away game in Mitrovica against the winless Legionaries.

The last placed and at the same time the only team without serious chances this season is the Legionaries from Sremska Mitrovica. Everything went badly for this team from the beginning of this season, starting with their opening game in Novi Sad, and considering one of their best players, running back Zoran Lončarević had only a limited role all season because of serving his army duty.

When league play is completed, the top two teams will meet in the final, deciding the champion for the 2006 season.
