The Ljubljana Silverhawks host the Budapest Wolves on May 12th for the Hungarian team’s SELAF season opener at Rugby field Gunclje, Ljubljana. In the North the Ljubljana Silverhawks are currently in last place with one win and two losses and need to win this home game to keep their playoff hopes alive. The Budapest Wolves are yet to play a game in the Conference also featuring the ASVÖ Gladiators (1-1).
The Silverhawks had lopsided losses against the ASVÖ Gladiators and the Novi Sad Dukes earlier and need to win their last home game in order to compete for one of the playoff spots in the North. The Budapest Wolves – 5-1 this year in pre-season and five Austrian Division I games – are going to be one though team to beat even though the Slovenians have seven Americans on their roster.
In recent battles the Hungarian team showcased its ability to both pass and run the ball, while winning all three of their last games coming from behind. Last weekend the Wolves played the Salzburg Bulls who scored twice in the opening period but were shut down by the Hungarian defense in the next three quarters. If the team from Budapest brings the defense it played last weekend and the offense it played against the Dodge Vienna Vikings II two weeks ago they will be almost impossible to beat. There is an if in this statement because the Wolves have a tendency to under perform against supposedly weaker teams.
Kickoff is at 3 PM Saturday at Rugby field Gunclje in Ljubljana. Look out for a desperate home team and a visiting team trying to start its SELAF season with a victory.
