The Austrians marched to an easy victory in a scoring wise one sided contest in Budapest. The Wolves’ foes started when they lost their kickoff return early in the first quarter and the much sharper Hohenems side capitalized on the Hungarians’ mistakes from then on.
The Blue Devils set the tone for the game on a 7 play drive resulting in a 7 yard touchdown pass from Bradley Guidry to Zachary Howard. On the ensuing kickoff Benjamin F recovered the short kick, giving the ball to the Austrians once again on the Wolves 25. Due to two incompletion and two penalties they were forced to punt to set up the Hungarian’s first possession, a drive that featured 11 plays and resulted in a blocked FG at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter started with two long drives by both teams. First the Hohenems side was forced to punt after a sack on Bradley Guidry by Uche Mbagwu, then Nic Haritonenko intercepted Attila Lendvai’s pass in the end zone returning the ball to the Blue Devils’ 40. This set up a quick drive built on short passes and a huge 45 yard run by Christian Stefani. To finish off the drive Cole connected again with Zachary Howard for the TD. The Wolves started the next drive on their 35 but were pushed back to their end zone on two sacks on Lendvai. The ensuing punt was blocked and recovered in the end zone by Christian Stefani for the touchdown setting up the halftime score of 20:0.
The home team started the second half with a 7 play drive but to no avail, they were forced to punt just outside of field goal range. The Blue Devils lost their first possession of the half on a fumble by Zachary Howard that was recovered by Eric Peterson on their 38. The good field position and a 26 yard run by Laszlo Csizmazia set up an easy score for returning FB Peter Cseperkalo, who punched one in form 2 yards briefly bringing Hungarian hopes back (20:7). The hopes were quickly shattered when Tino Muggwyler received the very next handoff and put up a stunning performance by rushing the end zone for 80 yards pushing the lead to 26:7. The next Wolves’ possession yet again ended in the Blue Devils’ redzone by an interception at the hands of Christian Stefani.
Bradley Guidry mixed short and long passes for a 50 yard 8 play drive caped by Tino Muggwyler’s touchdown reception (32:7) to start the final quarter. The game was out of reach for good and the Wolves gave way to their backups to gain some experience against one of the better opponents they will face this season. The quarter featured three more punts before Nic Haritonenko intercepted Mark Bencsics’ pass attempt and rushed it back 45 yards to set up the final score of 39:7 two minutes from full time.
