Silverhawks find success in Budapest

It took the Ljubljana Silverhawks three games to get a win after their triumph in the CEFL Bowl last year, but they finally got one. Despite a second half push by the home Wolves, the Silverhawks kept their big first half lead and won 33-47.

It was the Keith Lockwood show in the first half. The Silverhawks’ quarterback passed to Matic Tomse to give his team the lead and then repeated the same thing with a 63 yard pass to the same player. He then switched targets, connecting twice with Bojan Justin in the second quarter; and if that wasn’t enough, he ran in the end zone for the final points of the half.

The best the Wolves could do was tie the game at 7-7 with Dávid Récsey finding Krisztián Piros. They also reduced to 14-20 on a Péter Lenner run, but it was still a convincing 14-34 at the break.

If anyone though it would be an easy second half for the Silverhawks, they were in any case wrong. The third quarter belonged completely to the home side with Récsey hitting Csanád Király and Lenner finding the end zone once more for a slim 24-34 Silverhawks’ lead.

Anything more was unfortunately for the Wolves not to be. A few minutes into the final quarter, Lockwood passed for his fifth touchdown, this time to Jan Jakus. If it was not over at that point it was when Király’s pass was intercepted by Rok Štamcar and even worse, returned for a touchdown.

The Wolves managed one last score, with Piros getting his second. They still drop to 0-4 with the loss, third at home this year.

The Silverhawks’ on the other hand keep their playoff hopes alive. They are still behind Belgrade and Kragujevac and they don’t have much breathing room with a trip to Belgrade already next week, but for now, they can enjoy one win for a little bit.
