Alp Devils’ late surge

This Saturday, Western group of CEFL Cup has kicked off with a game between Kranj Alp Devils and Sarajevo Spartans.

First half was dominated by defenses. Spartans offense has managed to move down the field, but couldn’t score, where the Alp Devils were mostly three and out on every drive. That let the scoreboard undisturbed at the half.

In the third period, Alp Devils’ Rok Milek returned the opening kickoff for 79 yards to opponents’ 1 yard line. Two plays later, the Devils put the first points on the board, on the 7 yard run by running back Matic Hudovernik.

The Spartans were scoreless for the first three quarters, but in the last period they finally finished a drive. Quarterback Caleb Hecox passed to running back Dženan Brigić for their first touchdown of the season. They went for the two point conversion but failed to score.

After a botched attempt of an onside kick by the Spartans, their rivals recovered the ball and got a good field position. Running back Matic Hudovernik had the biggest play of the game and his 60 yard run brought the Devils inside the Spartans red zone. They finished the drive by powering in with their full back Peter Skubic on 3 yard run.

Spartans offense tried to come back by passing the ball, but Devils’ defender, Drejc Šarabon had picked one of those passes and returned it to Spartans’ 5 yard line. The Alp Devils scored again on a 5 yard pass from quarterback Nejc Lebar to wide receiver Samo Miklič and Hudovernik topped the drive off with a two point conversion for the final 22-6 score.
