Snowy Saturday in Sarajevo

The CEFL Cup Western group contest between Sarajevo Spartans and Zagreb Patriots played on 29 April started with a 40 minute delay due to a very surprising snow storm. The weather conditions had a big influence on the teams, interfering with coordinated plays and causing three turnovers after eight plays from scrimmage. As was expected, defenses have acclimated to the elements first and managed to completely halt opposing attacks, leaving the scoreboard intact at half time.

In the third period the Patriots were the first to score after their running back Benedikt Nikpalj broke free for a 55 yard dash. The Spartans came back on the next drive with a 35 yard pass from Caleb Hecox to Jasmin Salihović. Midway through the last quarter Hecox connected with Salihović again for a 28 yard touchdown to put the Spartans up 13-6. The Patriots made one last drive down to the Spartans 30 yard line, but were unable to score with only a 90 seconds remaining.

With this win and a 1-1 score Spartans have secured second place on the CEFL Cup Western group. For the moment the Patriots have dug themselves into a hole with a two game losing streak. They will have a tough time playing the leading Kranj Alp Devils in two weeks.
