BUDAPEST – The Budapest Wolves defeated the Nagykanizsa Tigers on October 16th in the VI. Hungarian Bowl and extended their undefeated streak against Hungarian opponents to 30th. The sreak started on 10.02.2005 in Nagykanizsa, where the Wolves in their national debut trashed the Demons (79-0) and its latest stop was the sixth Hungarian Championship game, where the 2007 CEFL finalists scored an unexpectedly lopsided victory (58-0) over the Nagykanizsa Tigers.
The past two national finals being close calls for the Wolves (20-14 vs Cowboys and 16-14 vs Györ Sharks) and the Tigers showing potential with their experienced Ukrainian imports in previous meetings led most of the 3200 in attendance at BVSC Stadium to expect a close matchup and maybe even an upset. Coach Hlavka’s team thought otherwise. The defending Hungarian Champs came out dominating from the opening kickoff, forcing two 3-and-outs and a fumble on defense, and capitalizing with two TD’s and a field goal on offense in the first period. By the time the stunned Tigers earned a first-down the second quarter was already on its way and they were down by 17. Their only drive penetrating deep into Wolves territory came in the 2nd, down by 24 they drove to the Wolves’ 3 in a 14 play 65 yard drive just to have Vasyl Yordan’s pass intercepted and returned 88 yards for the score by Balázs Ágota . Wolves QB Dávid Récsey passed for his 4th TD in a 20 second 3 play 41 yard drive connecting with Attila Lausch for the WR’s second TD to close out the first half.
The Mercy Rule was announced at half time and the team from Budapest started pulling starters after the first drive in the 3rd quarter but their production hardly droped. The defense forced yet an other fumble and an interception while the offense scored touchdowns on every possesion but the last one running out the clock. Péter Cseperkáló ran for 119 yards and a TD on 8 carries, while four other backs shared 19 carries with FB Dávid Koleszár scoring on a 1 yard run. QB Dávid Récsey (6/10, 74 yds, 4 TD, 0 INT) was voted MVP while giving way to backups István Kovács and Balázs Deák in the 2nd half to finish off the turnover free shutout.
The Wolves have participated in the Hungarian Bowl for the fourth time (2005, 2008, 2009, 2010) winning all four, outgaining their opponents 1446 (48.2 ppg) to 207 (6.9 ppg) in 30 games. The Budapest Wolves American Football Club was founded in 2004, participated in the Austrian leagues from 2005-2007 (Div2 2005, Div1 2006-2007), won the first Hungarian Bowl in 2005, fielded reserves teams for the 2006-07 national championships reaching semi-finals both times, and has won all three Hungarian titles since re-entering competition in 2008.
