The Hungarian champions scored a lopsided victory in record heat against the Silverhawks in Budapest on Sunday. The Wolves scored three unanswered touchdowns in the first period and never really let their feet off the throttle, securing their place in the finals with a convincing 49-6 victory. Their sole other Finals appearance in the CEFL was in 2007 when they led the Vukovi throughout the whole game only to be stunned in the last minutes with two touchdowns, eventually losing the game on an end of regulation extra point kick.
The teams started the game in temperatures over 35 degrees Celsius sunday afternoon and it seemed the heat had a bigger effect on guests who arrived to the Hungarian capitol on game day. The two teams fought a close battle in Lendava in June (17-13 for the Wolves) hence the three unanswered Wolves touchdowns were a surprise in the first quarter. The second period was closer, both teams scored once with the Silverhawks being stopped on a two-point conversion resulting in a 28-6 half time score.
While the Wolves only added seven point to their lead in the third this proved to be decisive, the guests didn’t seem the have what it takes to overcome a 29 point deficit in the time remaining. The Wolves added two more scores in the fourth to crown their superb performance in a game that decided this year’s Finals match-up.
The Hungarians finished behind the Vukovi in the League standings qualifying for the 2011 CEFL Bowl. Both teams are bidding for the right to organize the finals two weeks from now with the result to be published sometimes this week.
